First Aid Guide

  • A simple way to remember the aims of first aid is to think of the "Three P's" - Preserve Life Prevent Deterioration Promote Recovery
  • Preserve life: Your first aim is to preserve life by carrying out emergency first aid procedures. For example, opening a casualty's airway or performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
  • Preserving life should always be the overall aim of all first aiders. Remember though, this includes your own life! You should never put yourself or others in danger.
  • This is why the first stage in assessing a casualty (think DRABC) is to conduct a risk assessment and check for any dangers to yourself or bystanders. If a situation is too dangerous to approach, you should stay back and call for professional help.
  • Prevent deterioration: The second aim of first aid is to prevent the casualty's condition from deteriorating any further. For example, asking a casualty with a broken limb to stay still and padding around the injury will prevent the fracture from moving and causing further injury or pain.
  • In addition, this aim includes preventing further injuries. You should attempt to make the area as safe as possible and remove any dangers.
  • If removing danger is not possible you should attempt to remove the patient from the danger or call for specialist help.
  • Promote recovery: Finally, you can promote recovery by arranging prompt emergency medical help. In addition, simple first aid can significantly affect the long-term recovery of an injury. For example, quickly cooling a burn will reduce the risk of long-term scarring and will encourage early healing.

These guidelines can help you care for minor cuts and scrapes:

  • Wash your hands. This helps avoid infection.
  • Stop the bleeding. Minor cuts and scrapes usually stop bleeding on their own. If needed, apply gentle pressure with a clean bandage or cloth and elevate the wound until bleeding stops.
  • Clean the wound. Rinse the wound with water. Keeping the wound under running tap water will reduce the risk of infection. Wash around the wound with soap. But don't get soap in the wound. And don't use hydrogen peroxide or iodine, which can be irritating. Remove any dirt or debris with tweezers cleaned with alcohol. See a doctor if you can't remove all debris.
  • Apply an antibiotic or petroleum jelly. Apply a thin layer of an antibiotic ointment or petroleum jelly to keep the surface moist and help prevent scarring. Certain ingredients in some ointments can cause a mild rash in some people. If a rash appears, stop using the ointment.
  • Cover the wound. Apply a bandage, rolled gauze or gauze held in place with paper tape. Covering the wound keeps it clean. If the injury is just a minor scrape or scratch, leave it uncovered.
  • Change the dressing. Do this at least once a day or whenever the bandage becomes wet or dirty.
  • Get a tetanus shot. Get a tetanus shot if you haven't had one in the past five years and the wound is deep or dirty.
  • Watch for signs of infection. See a doctor if you see signs of infection on the skin or near the wound, such as redness, increasing pain, drainage, warmth or swelling.

*Treatment for headaches and fever depends on the cause. Bacterial infections may require antibiotics. Colds and flu viruses usually don't require treatment and go away on their own.

Your doctor may recommend rest and over-the-counter medications for symptoms of colds, flu, other infections, and allergies.

These include:

  • *Pain relievers
  • *Decongestants
  • *Saline or corticosteroid
  • *Cough suppressants
  • *Antihistamines
  • *Nasal sprays

Home Remedies:

At-home treatments may help relieve cold, flu, and allergy symptoms. These can help soothe headaches and reduce fevers.

  • Get plenty of rest
  • Drink warm drinks and plenty of fluids to thin mucus
  • Apply a cool, damp cloth to your eyes, face, and neck
  • Steam inhalation with vicks vaporub
  • Sit in a warm bath
  • Have a cool sponge bath
  • Drink warm broth or chicken soup

WOUNDS:

  • *Clean the wound with Dettol liquid diluted in water 1:3 parts
  • *Open antiseptic cream by puncturing the seal by the reverse side of the cap.
  • *Apply the cream on the Dressing (Gauze Swab).
  • *Apply the dressing on the wound and bandage it with Rolled Gauze

BURNS:

  • *Wash the place with cold running water.
  • *Open Antiseptic Cream by puncturing the seal by the side of the car.
  • *Apply on burnt areas and keep it open.

For severe bleeding, take these first-aid steps.

  • Call 102 or 108 your local emergency number if the wound is deep or you're not sure how serious it is.Don't move the injured person except if needed to avoid further injury.
  • Before checking for the source of the wound, put on disposable gloves and other personal protective equipment if you have them.
  • Remove any clothing or debris from the wound:
  • Look for the source of the bleeding. There could be more than one injury. Remove any obvious debris but don't try to clean the wound. Don't remove large or deeply embedded objects, and don't probe the wound.
  • Stop the bleeding:
  • Cover the wound with sterile gauze or a clean cloth. Press on it firmly with the palm of your hand until bleeding stops. But don't press on an eye injury or embedded object. Don't press on a head wound if you suspect a skull frac ture.
  • Wrap the wound with a thick bandage or clean cloth and tape. Lift the wound above heart level if possible.
  • Help the injured person lie down:
  • If possible, place the person on a rug or blanket to prevent loss of body heat. Elevate the feet if you notice signs of shock, such as weakness, clammy skin or a rapid pulse. Calmly reassure the injured person.
  • Add more bandages as needed:
  • If the blood seeps through the bandage, add more gauze or cloth on top of the existing bandage. Then keep pressing firmly on the area.
  • Keep the person still:
  • If you're waiting for emergency help to arrive, try to keep the injured person from moving.
  • If you haven't called for emergency help, get the injured person to an emer gency room as soon as possible.
  • Wash your hands:
  • After helping the injured person, wash your hands, even if it doesn't look like any blood got on your hands.
  • MUSCULAR SPASM/SPRAINS:
  • *Keep the affected part of the body in a comfortable position.
  • *Apply the muscle Relaxant gel on the affected position. Gentle and mild massage will give better and fast results.
